Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga is the seventh Jyotirlinga dedicated to the supreme God Shiva. Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga is situated on the Rameshwaram Island, district-Ramnathpuram, in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. the word Rameshwaram means “the god of Lord Ram”. This temple was consecrated by Lord Ram and is, therefore, one of the holiest shrines of Lord Shiva. The temple has the longest corridor amongst all the Indian temples. This Jyotirlinga is one of the most revered shrines for both the Shaivites(followers of Lord Shiva) and the Vaishnavites(followers of Lord Vishnu).

The temple has been built according to the South Indian temple architecture. The temple was not built by one or two kings but a number of them across centuries. The main eastern Gopuram was built in the 17th century by Dalai Setupati. The world-famous third corridor was constructed by Muthuramalinga Setupati. This corridor was called “Chokkatam Mandapam”.

Legend:

The Jyotirlinga of Rameshwaram was consecrated by the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu, Lord Ram in Treta Yuga(the third Yuga). After the demon King Raavan had abducted Lady Sita and Lord Hanuman found her on the island of Lanka, Shri Ram, Vanar Raj Sugreev(King of the Vanaras), King Jambhvanth( King of bears), Lord Hanuman and the entire Vanar-Sena reached Danushkodi.

Lord Ram prayed to Lord Varuna( Lord of the water element) and took his help to build a bridge on the sea. But when the construction of the bridge started, Lord Ram decided to pray to Lord Shiva to get his blessings before the war. Lord Ram made a Parthiv Linga out of the sand and called on the Sapthrishi Mandal to do the ‘Pran Pratishta’ and the puja.

Lord Siva appeared at the spot and asked Lord Ram for his wish. Lord Ram said, “Lord! Please bless me and help me to win over Raavan. He is also your devotee. He is invincible but because of your boon, he has turned boastful. He has won over all the three worlds. I am your servant. Bless me so that I can defeat Adharma.” Lord Shiva was delighted and said, “Thatastu!”

Lord Ram requested him to stay at Rameshwaram for purifying the souls in the future and for the welfare of others. Hearing this Lord Shiva manifested himself in the form of a jyotirlinga and established himself there.
